I have a week’s holiday planned for next week and I have been deciding what I want to read. I say read rather than do since I like to make maximum use of holiday time from work to catch up on my reading. In fact, as I did just today, I usually end up ordering a new batch of books from Amazon, despite the rather large piles already sitting about the house.
As many of you will know, I enjoy making use of reading lists. Although I also tend to read a lot of other things as well, I do like the satisfaction of completing a book list. Ticking each title off once it has been read is most enjoyable. I completed the BBC list of ‘100 books that everyone should read’, some time ago, and I moved on to another list, one I had long wanted to attempt. This was the Great Books list that I have discussed before. I have expanded the list of books out so that entries that are listed ‘The works of…’ are detailed more fully, providing me with the nice side effect of more boxes to tick. However I was shocked to see that, even without doing this for all authors, the list has expanded to at least 700 books. Some of them are not easy reads either. I think this may take the next decade or so, especially given my non list reading also.
I have also been putting off getting a ticket to see Audrey Niffenegger speak at Ely next week. I am not sure why I have been putting it off. I will get a ticket soon no doubt. It will be nice to have a cultured evening out, one that doesn’t involve the consumption of alcohol and/or curry!
I also hope to get a decent amount of writing done on my holiday, making a start on my new Writers Bureau course.
I should finally finish Sophocles tonight too. That’s another seven entries off the list.
Reading lists are wonderful, but I can’t obey them properly. You have my utmost respect for your dedication.

Although I follow them I am certainly not exclusive. I cannot work through a list in its entirety without branching off and then coming back to it. How do you flaunt the rules?

I get bored and star skipping over books lol

So basically you just do not read all of the books on the list. That’s a pretty major infraction of the rules. Still as long as you enjoy your reading it doesn’t matter how you pick new titles.

That’s good to hear. Long may it continue, the happiness, not necessarily the disorganisation 🙂

I’m very impressed with your dedication to the sport of reading. With those lists, I definitely think it should be considered a sport.

I like that. The sport of reading. Will it ever make it to the Olympics do you think? It is definitely a sport of enjoyment though. The hardest part has to be the strict training regime in the off season 🙂

If they have curling and synchronized swimming then reading should get in easily. 😉

That’s a great point. They do have some pretty tragic events don’t they. Perhaps we should start a petition to have competitive reading included. Although I am not sure how it would do as a spectator sport.

Good plan. Marketing and making it good entertainment, that should help the cause 🙂

I used to work a job where the slowest time of year was the week before and after Christmas, so I always took my vacation then – boy do I miss the week after Christmas when I would fix only crock-pot dinners and curl up, reading all day, working my way through my Christmas gift book pile! 🙂

A great time to be able to take your holidays. I only ever get to do this every five or six years, but whenever the holiday, whatever the length, I do like to spend most of it reading. If you’re presents are anything like me you need longer after Christmas for the book pile 🙂

Have you got room for them all? Good luck to them. I hope they find something suitable soon or that the economy picks up and Santa can re-employ them 🙂

My holiday doesn’t start until next week, but the plan is to get loads of reading done. Unfortunately not everyone else, (family and friends), appreciates this, but I know you do. Have you any interesting reading lists to share? Not that I will have time to start another for at least a decade 🙂

Reading lists can be great…until you start filling it with too many books and then you can’t decide what to read! haha
